Plan your Beijing trip

Choose a practical Beijing itinerary, compare guided and independent travel, and arrange sights, Great Wall days, evening activities and airport transfers.

Beijing rewards a plan that groups nearby sights and leaves room to explore. Imperial palaces, neighbourhood lanes and the Great Wall each deserve a different kind of day. Use this guide to build a trip around your interests, then choose whether to travel independently, with a private guide or in a shared group.

Start with your available days

With one full day, choose between a central-city visit and the Great Wall. Combining both can be possible with carefully matched reservations and private transport, but it leaves little time for galleries, a long wall walk or unhurried meals. An arrival or departure day is shorter than it looks once airport formalities and travel to your hotel are included.

For two days, a useful starting point is one day around the Forbidden City and nearby neighbourhoods, followed by a Great Wall excursion. With a third day, add the Summer Palace or Temple of Heaven and a hutong walk. Four or more days give you space for museums, shopping, food and a quieter outing such as Fragrant Hills. These are suggested combinations rather than fixed departures.

Group sights by geography

The Forbidden City, Tian'anmen area and Jingshan form a natural central-city cluster. The Temple of Heaven lies farther south; the Summer Palace is in the northwest. Moving among all three areas repeatedly consumes time that could be spent inside them. Plan the day's first entrance and final exit before choosing lunch or evening activities.

The Palace Museum's visitor information explains reservations and its normal Monday closure. A museum ticket and a visit to Tian'anmen Square have their own entry arrangements. Check both if you intend to visit both; a photograph beside the surrounding avenue is not the same as admission to the square. Keep your passport available for reservations and checks.

Choose a Great Wall experience

Badaling and the Ming Tombs combine mountain scenery with imperial history. Mutianyu suits visitors who want a managed wall visit with optional uphill transport, while Simatai can be considered with Gubei Water Town. Each section is a separate visitor destination with its own admission rules.

Choose by walking ability and the time you want on the wall, rather than by the number of additional stops. Steps and gradients remain part of the visit even when a cable car operates. Jinshanling and Simatai should be planned as separate managed areas, not an assumed continuous through-hike.

Decide how to travel

Shared tours can simplify transport and give you company, but meeting points, waiting time and a common pace affect the day. Check the actual group size, walking route, language and inclusions. A bus transfer does not automatically include a guide throughout every attraction.

Private day trips offer more control over departure, rest breaks and route length. They are particularly worth comparing for mixed mobility groups or a combination of suburban sights. Independent travel gives you flexibility in the city: use the transport guide and select a hotel near a convenient rail connection. A comfortable itinerary can mix all three approaches.

Make evenings part of the plan

Keep a demanding wall day separate from a tightly timed dinner and show if traffic would make the connection stressful. Evening itineraries explain the differences among acrobatics, Peking opera, martial-arts productions and a teahouse performance. Alternatively, spend an evening walking beside Shichahai or exploring one illuminated neighbourhood. Outdoor views and theatre tickets are different experiences, so choose the one you most want.

Arrange arrival and practical details

Check whether your flight uses Capital Airport or Daxing before arranging an airport transfer. Send the provider your flight number, terminal, hotel address and luggage requirements. For a multi-day visit, protect time for meals and weather changes instead of booking every hour. Summer heat, winter wind and public-holiday queues can make a shorter route the better choice.
