This four-day idea suits couples who want the imperial city, a memorable wall outing and some time to explore together. It assumes arrival on day one and departure on day four, so there are two full sightseeing days. Keep optional sights genuinely optional: the best use of a short stay is often time together at a few places rather than a long list of hurried stops.

Day one: arrive and find your bearings
Settle into the hotel and keep the first outing near your accommodation. A short walk, an easy meal and time to organise the following morning are enough after a long journey. If you arrive early, explore a shopping street or nearby lanes without adding a time-sensitive museum reservation.
Confirm the next day's admission and meeting arrangements before going to sleep. Choose a hotel area that suits your evenings as well as the sightseeing transfers; a pleasant restaurant within walking distance can be worth more than another distant attraction.
Day two: the imperial centre and an easy evening
Visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City with arrangements made for the actual date. Follow the palace from its southern approach towards the northern exit, choosing a small number of details or galleries rather than inspecting every hall. Give lunch and a seated pause proper space in the day.
Afterwards choose Temple of Heaven if ceremonial architecture is the priority, or Shichahai and the hutongs if you prefer a gentler afternoon. Trying to complete both, plus another exhibition and a show, leaves little space for either. For an evening together, plan a roast-duck dinner or a lakeside stroll according to your energy.
Day three: Simatai and the Gubei destination
Give Simatai a full outing. Its ridge walk can be steep, so choose a currently open route and a turnaround point that suits both of you. Discuss whether a lift is useful, remembering that the wall still has stairs.

The Simatai hiking guide explains the distinction between wall access, the town and evening products. If you want to stay for an evening experience, consider changing the accommodation plan to an overnight stay rather than combining it with an exhausted late return to central Beijing.
Day four: gardens only if departure allows
A late departure may leave room for a selective Summer Palace visit, focusing on the lake and Long Corridor. An early departure calls for breakfast and the airport or station journey instead. Keep enough margin for your luggage, the actual departure terminal and road conditions. The Olympic venues should not be another compulsory stop on the way.
Adapt the plan to your interests
If gardens matter more than the wall, substitute the Summer Palace for part of day three. If the wall is essential but you prefer a shorter outing, discuss Mutianyu instead. A current urban-planning exhibition or performance can be added only after confirming its venue and dates.
Tour Beijing is associated with Beijing Page. Use its four-day programmes to discuss a tailored proposal, specifying your preferred pace, hotel nights, wall section and any evening event. Confirm current inclusions and cancellation terms rather than assuming a fixed hotel or headline package price.
