Simatai offers a dramatic Great Wall landscape near Gubei Water Town in northeastern Beijing. Its steep ridges and watchtowers make it appealing to visitors who enjoy scenery and careful walking. A trip here should centre on the currently admitted visitor area, with enough time for the approach, the climb and the journey back to the city.
Plan for Simatai as its own destination
Do not treat Simatai as a short add-on to the Forbidden City or Summer Palace. The travel distance and the time needed inside the scenic area justify a full outing. An overnight stay in the Gubei area can be more comfortable if you want both a daytime walk and an evening experience.
The municipality's Beijing WTown introduction places the town and Simatai in the same destination area. Confirm whether your booking covers the wall alone, the town, a combined product or a night visit. These arrangements should not be inferred from one general admission description.
Choose a suitable walk
At the entrance, ask which towers and paths are open that day. Older accounts quote different tower limits; none should replace the current on-site boundary. Walk only within the admitted route and turn back when staff, signs or weather require it.

Simatai is not a flat promenade. Expect steep sections and steps that can be tiring on the descent as well as the ascent. A cable car may reduce part of the approach, but it does not make the ridge fully accessible. Confirm its operating status and connection to your chosen walking route before relying on it.
Allow a shorter version for your party: walk to a comfortable viewpoint, stop for photographs and return without trying to reach an arbitrary tower count. People with different abilities can enjoy the destination together without completing exactly the same climb.
Town time and lunch
After the wall, take lunch and a seated break. If your ticket includes Gubei Water Town, use the remaining time for its lanes, waterside views and refreshments. The town visit is a different experience from walking the historic wall, and can be the better afternoon option when the group is tired.
Evening wall access has its own permitted route and operating arrangements. Do not assume a daytime ticket, cable-car schedule or late city transfer automatically covers it. Decide whether to return to Beijing or stay locally before booking an evening programme.
No assumed crossing from Jinshanling
Tour Beijing's Simatai guide specifically warns that the link from Jinshanling is closed. Plan a self-contained visit instead of following an old through-hike description. A familiar trail on an old map is not evidence of current visitor permission.
