Beijing Four- and Five-Day Itinerary Ideas

Compare Beijing itineraries for couples, families and older travellers, with realistic arrival days, Great Wall choices and room for rest.

Four or five days in Beijing can include the imperial city, a Great Wall outing and neighbourhood time without turning every day into a race. The important distinction is between calendar days and full sightseeing days: arrival and departure may consume most of two days. Start with your actual flight or train times, then select the route that fits the time left.

Choose four days for a focused first visit

With an arrival day, two full days and a departure day, concentrate on the Forbidden City and a single Great Wall section. Fit additional city sights around them only if admission and your energy permit. A late departure can support a short garden visit; an early flight cannot.

Our four-day couples itinerary combines the imperial centre with Simatai and time around the hutongs. The four-day family itinerary uses Mutianyu and keeps children's interests and rest breaks central. The four-day itinerary for older travellers gives more attention to walking demands and choosing fewer interiors.

Age is only a starting point for a conversation. Some older visitors want a strenuous walk, while some young adults prefer gardens and long lunches. Select according to interests, stamina and the kind of holiday you want.

What the fifth day changes

An extra day is most useful as breathing room. It can separate the Summer Palace from the main city day, allow a museum visit without watching the clock or leave a flexible afternoon if the Great Wall weather is poor. Filling it with every omitted attraction defeats that advantage.

The five-day couples itinerary creates space for the Summer Palace and a chosen cultural stop. The five-day family itinerary offers room for science or animals alongside the classic sights. The five-day itinerary for older travellers separates the major walking days and leaves space for a museum, gardens and a quieter evening.

Reserve the fixed elements first

Palace admission, particular museum sessions and any performance can determine the order of the city days. Check the Palace Museum visitor information before fixing your dates. Do not plan an important interior visit around a vague promise that a guide can obtain tickets later.

Choose the wall section deliberately. Mutianyu works well for a selective ridge visit with several approach options. Simatai is a longer excursion in the Gubei destination and should have its own day. The old Jinshanling–Simatai crossing is not a substitute for checking currently permitted routes.

Pick accommodation for the actual journey

A useful hotel is one that makes your evenings and daily departures easy. Compare the neighbourhood, access to a station or taxi, room layout and the walk from the street entrance. A courtyard stay may provide atmosphere but have steps or limited vehicle access; a larger hotel may offer easier arrival and family-room choices.

Ask whether the quoted stay includes breakfast, which nights are booked, whether the beds suit your party and what happens if an arrival is delayed. No particular hotel is assumed by these suggested itineraries.

Keep meals and evenings flexible

Leave at least one evening without a show. A roast-duck meal, a quiet lakeside walk or simply returning early to the hotel can be a better finish after the wall. Confirm a performance's actual venue and running time before adding it; a show name in an older route does not guarantee the same production is operating.
